Brief Review: Amtrak Northeast Regional

In order to catch my flight to Hong Kong, I needed to position from Baltimore (where I was visiting family) to New York. Travel between these cities generally presents two options: bus or train. Amtrak tickets can be quite expensive, but they are generally reasonable if you book far enough in advance. I was able to book a seat on Amrtak 188 (how have they not changed that number yet!?) for only $52.

I don't have much to say about the ride except that it was a pleasant passenger experience that beats the shit out of taking the bus. Power outlets are abundant, the seats are comfortable, and the ride is smooth. I was able to grab a seat near the wheelchair area for extra legroom. The only issue was on approach to New York where we stopped for about 20 minutes due to single tracking. I can't complain about the maintenance though, given the general state of disrepair our infrastructure seems to suffer from.

Bottom line: If your travel plans call for a trip along the northeast corridor, Amtrak is the way to go. Just remember to book early to get a decent rate.
